"I am going to live my life exercising my right to decorate myself because I am a woman before I am a prosecutor". She is daring and outspoken. But it's a different story when a prosecutor makes such remarks while placing a calf massage machine in her office. SBS TV series "Prosecutor Princess" is a story about how self-obsessed and extravagant newbie prosecutor Ma Hye-ri, who has no clue about her profession, matures into a human being with ideas, common sense and a real district attorney. One will easily be able to predict how the story of "Prosecutor Princess" will play out by just looking at Ma Hye-ri who stands dressed in a hot pink dress amidst other prosecutors and lawyers all wearing achromatic colors. A highlights video revealed at the press conference also consisted mainly of the struggles Ma Hye-ri goes through as a character who will sacrifice everything for the shoes she wants and run around the prosecutors' office in fancy outfits. This immature princess will start to realize just how tough the real world is and two princes -- one a prosecutor and another a lawyer -- will guide her two arms.
Anticipation Quotient (1-10 points)
What if this ends up being another romance drama where the main characters pretend to be prosecutors? - 6 points
What is wrong with being an extravagant district attorney when we have useless prosecutors? - 8 points
New television series "Prosecutor Princess" [SBS]
The most frequently heard words at the press conference for "Prosecutor Princess", held at Seoul's SBS headquarters on March 23, were "bright, fun drama". Director Jin Hyeok, who had also helmed "Shining Inheritance", showed confidence in delivering the fun factor within the romantic comedy genre by saying, "I tried to make a fun drama and I think it will be a fun drama". Like executive producer Kim Young-seop said -- "it is a romantic comedy but one which remains authentic about life and love" -- whether "Prosecutor Princess" will remain a plain dating story at the prosecutors' office or turn out to be a refreshing story about how a twenty-something woman who is conflicted between her own desires and the world, will eventually depend on how the drama portrays "a society newbie clashing with the society and the world and how she changes", like Jin Hyeok explained. Kim So-yeon's bright and honest personality, which was displayed in KBS TV series "Win, Win", is said to have even changed the character of Ma Hye-ri. The acting battle of Kim So-yeon, who has grown out of the warrior character in KBS TV series "IRIS" and says that she has "found a role that is really befitting for me and that I can show myself in", is one reason to look forward to watching "Prosecutor Princess". As Choi Song-hyeonsaid, "Everyone calls me 'Jin Geom' [short for 'Prosecutor Jin Jeong-seon'] on the set. It is a homonym [with 'a true prosecutor'] but I really want to be a true prosecutor", the true swordfight will begin on March 31 when all three public networks each premiere their Wednesday/Thursday dramas. Will "Prosecutor Princess" be able to occupy a dominant position with the sword the princess wields?

"Princess Prosecutor" receiving attention from Japanese media

New SBS TV series "Princess Prosecutor" is stirring Japan prior to its showing on Korea's small screen, according to a press release by the show's broadcaster on Wednesday.
Producers of "Prosecutor" explained that the attention from the Japanese media appears to stem from the popularity of Korean actors Park Shi-hoo and Kim So-yeon, who have "recently become Hallyu stars" in the country.
"When the drama officially premieres, it will be talked about not only in Korea and Japan but throughout Asia," the producers were quoted as saying.
Earlier this month, Japanese fans and Sky-Perfect TV producers reportedly visited the set of "Prosecutor" to see Park, who has held two fan meetings in Japan.
Kim is expected to gain increased popularity when KBS2 TV's blockbuster drama "IRIS" starts airing in Japan next month.
"Prosecutor", about a newbie district attorney Ma Hye-ri who matures into a true prosecutor, is the second collaboration between writer So Hyun-kyung and producer Jin Hyuk, the duo behind last year's smash hit drama "Shining Inheritance".
"Inheritance", which starred Korean actress Han Hyo-joo and singer Lee Seung-gi, recorded a 47.1 percent viewership rating during its successful run in Korea and wrapped up its airing on Japan's Fuji TV yesterday scoring the highest rating in its time slot.
"Prosecutor", which will be broadcast every Wednesday and Thursday evening, premieres tonight in Korea.

RECAP/PREVIEW
*spoiler
The basic plot features Ma Hye-ri (Kim So-yeon) as a fashion-loving prosecutor who is the latest addition in the public prosecutor’s office. With her love of stylish clothing and extravagant shoes (and jewelry, and handbags), she stands out in the low-key, no-nonsense office, and not in a good way. It’s no surprise, then, that Episode 1’s plot largely centers around a pair of fabulous shoes.
As the daughter of a prosecutor, she has made it through school at his prodding, and thinks she’s finally free of all that hard work. Of course, we know her hard work is just about to start. Her first encounter with a case shows us that what she’s lacking isn’t a brain — she’s plenty smart, and she knows the law — but a compassion and connection to her cases. The law is cut-and-dried to her, and developing an attachment to her cases on a basic human level will probably figure largely in her growth.
The big lure here is certainly Kim So-yeon, whose take on frivolous Ma Hye-ri is bubbly and entertaining. I am not by any means comparing her acting to Mi-shil in Queen Seon-deok, but both roles gave me a similar sense of watching a skilled actress diving into a character with gusto and enjoying playing around. Kim has altered her intonation and speech patterns and completely changed her image, and it’s particular fun to watch her because it was only a few months ago that she was so tough and fierce in IRIS.

This is essentially Legally Blonde set in a public prosecutor’s office, and I think the similarities are pretty deliberate, down to Hye-ri’s offbeat candidness, overaccessorization, and near-garish fashion sense. For some reason it doesn’t feel like a total copycat to me, though, and I wonder if maybe the cultural differences are enough to set it apart.
Where Prosecutor Princess falters is in that everything feels just a little too familiar. I’m always looking for a drama to show that one flash of inventiveness, a twist on a trope, or a jolt of new energy — it doesn’t have to be completely new, but there’s got to be something that feels different. I don’t get that feeling fromProsecutor Princess.
The characters and plot setup are straightforward thus far. They’re aiming to give Park Shi-hoo’s character a tinge of mystery, and to their credit they achieve that, since I’m curious to know what his deal is. But that’s a purely intellectual curiosity, not an emotional one. Neither he nor Han Jung-soo’s serious prosecutor character have been explained much, but I don’t find that I’m very interested. They haven’t really broken through to give their characters life, and I thought Han Jung-soo was stiff.
There’s a yet-unexplained subplot regarding a case Han Jung-soo has been following for three years, but like with many dramas with a legal (or business) angle, the pace drags when we linger on the case.Partner lost me with its dry legal storylines despite the chemistry between the leads; I fear the same may happen with Prosecutor Princess. (At least this drama is working in an additional angle with Hye-ri’s professional and personal growth, which may save it.)
Based on the first episode, my prediction is that Prosecutor Princess will have a small but loyal following. It’s not bad, it’s just in a tough timeslot — I think those who want something more substantial will gravitate toward Cinderella’s Sister, while those who want a light romantic comedy may be more drawn to the zippier Personal Taste. I’ve been wrong before, but that’s my gut feeling.
