Boarding school is usually a place where kids get serious about school, conduct, or rebellion. In the case of Magni, he got serious about music- and then some.
Born in 1978 in a small eastern Iceland town, the powerful pop singer started a band at the young age of 11 and by 15 had already performed with numerous bands on stage. But it was at the aforementioned boarding school (Eidar) where he took advantage of available musical facilities, spending as much time as he could playing the music that would so dictate his future.
From there he sang in the band Shape, playing various spots in East Iceland and releasing an album in 1997. In 1999, Magni made the significant move to frontman for the band A Moti Sol--subsequently becoming one of the biggest pop acts in Iceland. With A Moti Sol, Magni now has six albums (two of which went gold), hit songs, gigs galore, duets with other Icelandic pop and rock stars, and various other notable projects to his immense credit. When we said serious about music "and then some" we meant it.

SOMEWHERE IN Hollywood there were wannabe pop stars practicing their scales and a snappy comeback to an acidic Englishman should they get chosen to compete on the most popular singing competition in the world.
But elsewhere in Hollywood, the bricks of one hillside mansion were getting shaken down to the mortar by Tommy Lee (Motley Crue drummer), Walnut Creek's Jason Newsted (ex-Metallica bassist) and Gilby Clarke (former guitarist for Guns N' Roses) and hard-core rockers ready to go "Supernova."
The CBS series "Rock Star: Supernova" has rockers competing each week for a spot on the tour bus with Lee, Newsted and Clarke. The winner, chosen through a combination of votes from viewers and the rock trio, will become part of the band at the end of the road.
After a taping of the show on Sunday (the series airs at 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday on CBS), it was time to party with judges and remaining contestants on the show. The bright blue Hpnotiq flowed freely, although the drink of choice was Dos Equis and Jack Daniel's.
It was much more relaxed than earlier in the evening when the rockers were judging the "Supernova" candidates.
"It's not cool to judge people, but that's what you've got to do on this show, so I choose to stay constructive in my criticism so it can help them instead of just trying to make myself look good," Newsted says.
"I can't do it any other way because we're going to be onstage with the person who wins this and we have to be able to tour and go onstage with integrity."
Newsted says he's constantly gathering information on the contestants, even when they don't know he's looking. He wants hard workers, and someone who will fit in well with the band.
This might not qualify Lukas Rossi, who refused to take the mic during the freestyle concert that took place for almost two hours during the late night party.
"If you had asked, if someone saw me walking past and said, 'Hey, Lukas, can you do something for us?' I would have done it," says the Toronto native, who's actually more attractive in person than his insane Hobbit look on the small screen.
Rossi sniffed like a royal turning his nose up at a Wal-Mart shirt when he explained that he "didn't do cover songs."
Except every week on the show.
And the prospect of doing cover songs didn't seem to stop Newsted, Lee or Clarke from performing for the small crowd. While partygoers ate pizza topped with salmon and caviar by Wolfgang Puck catering, the room rocked like San Francisco in the'89 quake.
