1st episode <8th May 2005>

A new season of The Apprentice brings with it new faces, new challenges and a surprising new twist that reshapes the competitive landscape. The eighteen fresh candidates arrived at Trump Tower and waited outside the infamous boardroom - a place they would surely try to avoid in the future. The group stood in silence, sizing each other up. Tana, a sales executive, said in an interview that there were a few people that looked like they might not be "Mr. Trump material." She may have been talking about Danny, who entered wearing a red suit with a guitar slung over his shoulder. John described Danny by saying: "The guy in the leisure suit obviously dances to the beat of a different drummer. And apparently that drummer loves polyester." In her own interview, Erin said she was out to prove that women can be sexy, powerful and smart.
After letting the group stew, Trump had them enter the boardroom. There, The Donald welcomed the candidates to their sixteen week job interview and warned them it was going to be rough. He also introduced two people who needed no introduction: George and Carolyn. Only minutes into the competition, Trump revealed the big twist that would change the game. He said that this time he wasn't going to split the group into men versus women; instead it was going to be college grads versus high school grads. Of the eighteen men and women assembled, nine had college degrees while the other nine had entered the workforce right after high school. The thing they had in common was that they were all very successful. Trumped dubbed the new competition Book Smarts versus Street Smarts. Trump also pointed out one other major difference between the two groups - those with only a high school diploma earn three times as much as the college grads! Next, Trump laid out the familiar ground rules. The two teams would compete in weekly business tasks. The winning team would get a reward and the Project Manager would be exempt from firing on the following task. The losing team would meet back in the boardroom where someone would be fired.
After Trump dismissed the candidates, they went up to the suite where they would (hopefully) be spending many weeks to come. The reaction was unanimous. People were impressed with their luxurious new home. The group found a bottle of champagne on ice and toasted each other. Next, the teams split into their separate groups and were charged with their first order of business: to name their team. John was the first to take a shot across team lines when he said that he wanted his side not to be known as the high school team, but the wealthier team. The comment drew whoops and hollers from his team, but the other group seemed subdued.
When the team of college graduates met, Danny asked for the title of Chief Morale Officer. Danny certainly broke the ice with the group and also started what was to become the team cheer of "Unbelievable!" The group batted ideas around and Danny tested names by grabbing his guitar and singing songs about them. While some team members appreciated Danny's enthusiasm, Verna said that Danny needed to focus. But when Danny played the graduation march, Stephanie suggested Magna for the team name. It was short for magna cum laude, which means "with distinction" and is often used as a title for high achieving graduates. Everyone got behind the name and Magna was born. Then, led by Danny, the group yelled another "Unbelievable!" for good measure. The high school (or wealthier) group threw a few names around. Brian suggested Brass Balls Inc., but not everyone warmed to the idea. Tara suggested Net Worth and the name stuck.
The next morning, the teams gathered on the rooftop of Trump Tower, with its incredible view of the city. The teams presented their new names and Trump approved of both. Then Trump laid out the first task. Teams would work with Burger King, the fast food giant with over 11,000 restaurants worldwide. Each team would choose one of six new burgers that Burger King had developed to market and sell. Then each group would operate a Burger King franchise for the day and offer their new burger to the public. The team that earned the most revenue from sales of their new burger would win. The losing team would meet Trump back in the boardroom where someone would be fired. George and Carolyn would be along to observe and to report back to The Donald.

Net Worth had a team meeting to pick a Project Manager. John stepped up and said that he had restaurant experience, so the group elected him. On Magna, Todd said that he had run his own restaurant - and that was enough for his teammates, who agreed that Todd should lead for this task. Danny chimed in, saying his forte was marketing. Stephanie also said she had marketing experience and so she and Danny became the group's marketing team.
Net Worth met their Burger King chef down at the franchise that the team was set to run. The group carefully examined and sampled the six new burgers that the fast food chain had developed. Although there were some unique choices (including one with jalapeno) they selected the burger they thought they would have the easiest time selling: the Western Angus Burger. Magna met at their franchise and scrutinized the six new burgers as well. Verna declared herself a fast food expert, admitting that it was her favorite food, and said that the Triple Cheeseburger was the winner. The team went with Verna's taste buds and the Triple Cheeseburger.
With their product selected, Todd sent Danny and Stephanie off to Burger King's headquarters to meet with the company about the team's marketing plan. Next, Todd made Alex the restaurant manager. Alex split up the duties and selected Verna and Erin to work the cash registers. The rest of the group would work other areas, including the kitchen. Then the Book Smarts group got a crash course in making Whoppers and taking customer orders. Erin seemed to have some trouble operating the cash register. Verna speculated that Erin had never been to a fast food restaurant, let alone had any experience in how to take fast food orders. In an interview, Alex said that he noticed that Todd didn't get trained on any station in the restaurant. Alex added that he felt Todd wasn't in it together with the rest of the team.
At the Net Worth franchise, John summarized the team's marketing plan. To promote their Western burger they would make "Wanted: Dead or Alive" posters and have someone dressed as a cowboy outside the restaurant. Tana suggested that they give away a trip to the West - two tickets to Las Vegas. Next, Brian, who had owned a dollar store, led a group to get inexpensive decorations for their promotion. Brian used his negotiating prowess to get a free Viking hat thrown in with the deal. Kristen, however, was not impressed. In an interview, she said that a Viking hat had nothing to do with their task: "What are we, in Romper Room? You know, we're here to do a job, we're not here to negotiate a freaking plastic Viking hat."
Danny and Stephanie, the marketing team for Magna, met with Russ Klein, President of Burger King Brands, Inc. to discuss their marketing ideas for the Triple Cheeseburger. In an interview, Stephanie admitted that they were not prepared for the meeting. When Russ asked what new name the team had for the product, they didn't have one. When Russ asked who their customers were Danny responded with, "Good question." Danny admitted that they didn't have time to do as much research as they would have liked. Finally, when Danny pitched their Just Say Cheese campaign, Russ politely said that the concept was "okay" and "straight ahead." After the meeting, Danny wanted to ditch their campaign and come up with a new one. So, he and Stephanie sat around and brainstormed again. In an interview, Stephanie said that she felt Danny was shooting down all of her ideas. Back at the Burger King restaurant, Todd worried that he wouldn't have a marketing plan in time. Finally, Danny suggested "Triple Play" as an ad slogan and said that their campaign would have a baseball theme. Todd was glad to hear a decision had been reached and he said that he "loved" the idea.

Net Worth also met with Russ Klein. John pitched their Dead or Alive campaign and Russ approved. Kristen and Tana went to pick up the airline tickets to Las Vegas that the team was raffling off, but when the two women got to the location, they discovered their travel agent was a guy working out of his apartment - along with his two bulldogs. Kristen worried about the transaction, but it was Tana who should have been concerned. One of the dogs got a little too excited and relieved himself all over Tana's leg. Fortunately, the two women got the tickets and got out of the apartment.
The day of the competition arrived. Alex, the restaurant manager for Magna, said he was confident... until he saw the promotion that Danny and Stephanie had created. Alex said that he was "horrified" by what he saw. The team's marketing campaign consisted of several cardboard boxes with pictures of burgers on them. In the center box a hole was cut where passersby could attempt to toss in a ball. Alex said it looked like drunk hippies threw some stuff together to make a little raft to float on. Even the neutral Carolyn called the display "sad." Danny also attempted to serenade people while wearing a pair of antennae to draw customers inside the restaurant. But Magna had another problem. During the lunch rush, the two candidates on cash registers couldn't keep up with the hungry customers. Alex said that Todd was floating around, but couldn't be of much help because he wasn't trained on anything in the restaurant. The wait got so bad that some customers left without ordering - and potential sales of the Triple Cheeseburger walked out with them. By contrast, Net Worth had adorned their restaurant's front with professionally printed signs that went along with their Dead or Alive theme. Tara and Brian dressed as a cowgirl and cowboy to lure people in. The team also promoted their trip giveaway. On the inside of the restaurant, the other women of Net Worth were working hard, pushing their Western burger and convincing those on the fence to give one a try.
After all of the hard work of selling their specialty burgers, the two teams met with Trump, Carolyn and George in the boardroom. George announced that Magna sold 139 units for a total of $553.22. But Carolyn said that Net Worth had sold 182 of their burgers for a total of $596.96. Net Worth, the "high school" team, had won! Trump said that he's a great believer in education, but that he may have to start reassessing his position. As the victors, Net Worth won the reward of a fine dinner with The Donald at the 21 Club, one of the most celebrated restaurants in New York. Magna would see Trump again too - back in the boardroom where someone would be fired.
At the 21 Club, Trump and Melania met the winning team. They were all escorted to a secret basement room, which was used to store liquor during Prohibition. While Net Worth was dining in style with The Donald, Magna had a team meeting at the suite. Todd announced that all of the team's frustration stemmed from the marketing and advertising. Danny, who was in charge of marketing and advertising, disagreed and pointed out that some customers left the restaurant without ordering because they weren't being served fast enough. Later, Todd told Alex privately that he would be bringing both Alex and Danny into the boardroom with him to face the firing. Alex told Todd that Todd should have controlled Danny. In an interview, Alex was even harsher: "Todd is a terrible leader. Danny is a steamroller with a drunk driver at the helm." Danny and Stephanie said they would protect each other in the boardroom. While Erin, who seemed upset that the group would have to say negative things about each other, cried on Todd's bed.
Judgment Day. Magna Corporation entered the boardroom and Trump said that, as a college graduate, he was a little embarrassed that the team of college grads was beaten by a team of high school grads. Trump got to the heart of the matter and said he heard that the team just didn't have enough people on the cash registers. Todd admitted that he had only two people trained to run the registers. George jumped in and said that the other team had three people trained on the cash registers. He said that Magna ought to be ashamed that they missed the basic point of having the ability to handle sales. Carolyn said she thought the promotion was "horrific." George said he couldn't tell what the team was trying to promote. Carolyn said that Danny looked like a street performer. Danny argued that he drew attention to the restaurant and got people in. But Carolyn countered that the job wasn't just to get people into the restaurant; it was to promote and sell the new burger the team had selected. Todd jumped in and called the marketing horrendous. Donald then questioned Danny's wardrobe and wondered if Danny could succeed in the Trump organization with the way he dresses. Verna agreed it would be a handicap. Erin said that while she loved the way Danny dresses, you have to dress in the right clothes to succeed in the corporate world. Trump went around the table and asked each candidate who they would fire. Todd, Verna, Bren, Alex, and even Stephanie (Danny's marketing partner) all said Danny. Kendra said Todd should be fired - but only because he couldn't control Danny. Danny said he would fire Todd because not enough people were trained on the cash registers. Todd picked Alex and Danny to come back to the boardroom to face the firing with him. The others on the team were safe... for at least one more week.
After Todd, Alex and Danny left, George said he thought that Danny was a loose cannon, but felt that Magna lost the task because they didn't have enough people trained on the cash registers - and that was ultimately Todd's responsibility as Project Manager. Carolyn agreed. Todd, Alex and Danny entered the boardroom again. Trump and Carolyn fired questions at Todd about how many of his team members were trained to run the cash registers. Again, Todd had to admit that only two out of the entire team of nine could operate them. But just as the pressure was building on Todd, Alex diverted some of it to himself when he admitted that, as the person in charge of the staff, he had made the decision to train just two people on the registers. Trump said that he first thought Alex was safe, but he didn't think so anymore. Trump said that all of a sudden Danny looked like he was coming back. Todd tried to shift some of the heat back to Danny by calling him "uncontrollable". But Trump and Carolyn said that Danny was Todd's failure because Todd couldn't manage him. Trump said Alex did a lousy job. Trump added that Todd didn't lead and failed to make sure enough people were trained on the cash registers. And Trump called Danny a "disaster". Finally, Trump said that this decision was hard for him, but he looked Todd in the eye and told him, "You didn't have the leadership. You're fired."

The Comments .......

Episode 1
Wow! I have to say, this first episode was fantastic! I loved it! What a cast of characters you are! It will, unlike our Season 2, be difficult to see most of you get fired. You were thoroughly enjoyable to watch! You guys are not only tenacious personalities, but also quite funny at that! I must admit though, as the 8:30pm premiere rolled around, I was as nervous for you as I was watching our own first show, but all I have to say now is..."Unbelievable!" ~ Thank you Danny!
Of course, the show begins with the big guy arriving in front of Trump Tower exclaiming, "My name is Donald Trump. YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT ME!" What? I mean I've heard a lot come out of that man's mouth, but are you kidding me? I was on the ground in tears laughing. He doesn't cease to amaze me, that man! That was a topper DT ~ great intro!
So, Book Smarts vs. Street Smarts, huh? Very clever. Very, very clever! It completely changes the whole game and I must admit, I believe for the better! It was so much fun to watch, but right off the bat. I think I am a fan of Street Smarts. Sometimes you just can't beat experience. No book can teach you that. Plus, with folks like Kristen, Brian, John and Tara on your side, it's going to be a tough competition!
However, Book Smarts, you do have Michael, Erin, Bren and of course, Danny. Danny, whoever verbally beat upon you needs a good beating themselves. You're absolutely adorable, fun and you made the whole night thoroughly entertaining! Don't let them rip on your clothes! You worked your ass off on this task, as "unconventional" as it may be, you did it kid!
What I find interesting as we begin this journey is that I'm noticing although this season is set up very different from the first two, there are already a lot of close similarities. That is, how "the game" is being played and how people choose to play it. Some of you are upfront, stick your neck out on the line and speak up and others are already appearing to sail right "under the radar". Although I respect the ones who go out on a limb, it does in fact increase your chances to be fired. The fact is, you're an easier target when the going gets tough. The ones who sail under the radar are usually the slick talking finger pointers that tend to make it further in the end ~ sad but true.
On The Book Smart side we have Michael, Bren, Danny, Verna and Erin telling it like it is and sticking their necks out. Alex, Stephanie and Kendra on the other hand may be official "under the radar" players and could make it far. Alex, I have to be honest, I didn't see much of anything from you but just a lot of complaining, talking and finger pointing instead. Stephanie, selling Danny down the river was totally uncalled for. And Kendra, although I respected how you handled yourself and DT in the boardroom, I have a feeling you could really be the official "under the radar" player and make it pretty far.
On the Street Smart side, we have a lot of the same. Kristen, Brian and Angie may really stir the pot and could be a lot of fun to watch, but watch out instead! I can't foresee a long future at DT's organization.
With that said though, ANYTHING is possible in the boardroom. After all, we have only hit the tip of the iceberg on task one. There is a lot less sleep to be had. We will get to see tons more clashing of personalities I'm sure.
I'll end here by saying goodbye to Todd. The first fired. It was unfortunately luck of the draw, my friend. I'm sorry, but there always has to be a first. I don't believe you did a bad job, it's tough being PM, especially on the very first task. At least you had a very classy exit. Well done!
For the rest of you, hired or fired, try and enjoy all of this. It is after all an opportunity of a lifetime and you made it this far. Congratulations!
Sincerely,
Your Apprentice Alumna,
Jennifer D. Crisafulli

Who's the King Now?
It may not come as a big surprise to anyone that I might be a little biased as I review this season of the Apprentice. That being said, I will try my level best to shoot it to you straight without too much subjectivity. And, so, my reaction to this season's first episode: yeeeeeehaw! Just like I told 'ol Mr. Trump a year ago, "PHD, MBA, BA, to me its all B.S. If you can't close you ain't worth a crap!"
Now, to be fair, selling a hamburger is the most basic of deal closing (except maybe selling lemonade) and I think that the college grads, team Magna, actually were an underdog for this first task. Let me explain. You see, the one thing you absolutely learn from the school of hard knocks is how to get down, get dirty and execute. And, more often than not, you don't have time to over think things with a lot of planning. You simply use your common sense, apply your experience and get to work knowing that a good plan today is better than the perfect plan tomorrow. So, while the college team was caught up in strategy, team Net Worth was getting to it. One of the first things John, the Project Manager for Net Worth, did was set expectations for the team. He not only made it clear to the other members of team Net Worth that they were not going to be intimidated, he gave a great pre-game speech to the employees at the Burger King, letting them know that like them, none of the members of Magna have a college degree. BRILLIANT. This is a tactic that won't necessarily work on future tasks but sure did here. My mamma always told me I'd have to work twice as hard for half as much and the Burger King employees may feel the same way and a motivated sales force goes a long way!
Meanwhile, you could almost sense the college kids underestimating Net Worth. Now, don't get me wrong this wasn't what ultimately killed them but it sure could have been a difference in what was a pretty slim margin of defeat. What did kill them was the incredible inability to process what sales they did have in a timely manner (I'm guessing not many of them have fast food team member on their resume) and, Project Manager Todd's inability to focus Danny, the creative dude with the guitar. Believe me, I've met plenty of creative types over the years and they can be a great asset but let's get real, you have to realize when you're standing around peeing down your leg!
In the end you knew Todd was doomed. Especially in the early rounds Mr. Trump is going to put responsibility on project managers unless they stand out as leaders and lose through circumstances out of their control.
So, I tip my hat to our high school heroes. But, don't let it go to your heads not every task will be this easy! You want some fries with that?

1st Episode : Lesson Learned
Training Is Key: Broad-based and Job-specific
"A leader's job is made easier if he or she has a team of well trained employees. Not only should employees be trained to do the job for which they were hired, but they should also be trained to step in and assist a colleague when needed. Ideally, employees should be trained and empowered to make independent decisions that will contribute to the group's achievement of its mission," said Edward T. Reilly, president and CEO of American Management Association. Reilly offered the following advice on training employees:
# Find out what your team knows. Conduct a training needs assessment for each of your employees. This should be done when someone first joins the staff and as part of the performance management process.
# Educate everyone about the business you're in. Make sure all employees know what the real business of the organization is, what it offers, and the needs of its customers. Then relate the tasks of each person and team to the overall objectives of the organization.
# Be a part of the training. Demonstrate its importance to the group by taking time away from your own work to learn the same skills that your team is learning. Besides the motivational value of your participation, you may never know when you have to step in and do work assigned to one of your staff members.
# Include staff in the planning process. Employees will get the most out of the training if they feel strong ownership in the plan and its success.
# Link training to business needs. The business plan or department goals will be met if the training is tied to strategic goals. If it isn't, the goals or plan may be compromised.
# Cross-train team members. That way they can fill another person's job when the need arises-when a staff member is on vacation or ill. This ensures that the work still gets done. It also enables you to address hourly, weekly or seasonal changes in workload.
# Empower your staff. Train them to succeed. Empowering employees can inspire them to higher levels of performance, but employees must understand fully the amount of authority they have. Periodic reviews ensure that the scope of authority is clear.
# Encourage continuous learning. In addition to job-specific and cross-training, find opportunities for your staff to have opportunities for other professional development. Such training enables them to learn new skills and behaviors, to gain confidence, and to prepare to take on new responsibilities as the need arises.

1st Episode Reward for Net Worth Corp

FOUR MILLION DOLLARS OF WINE
Donald and Melania arrived at '21' Club to greet Net Worth, and lead them into the private wine cellar where they would be dining. Before entering the cellar, a representative of '21' Club explained that all of the club's liquor was stored in the cellar during prohibition, and therefore entry was protected by an unusual set of security precautions: "The only way you can get in through this 2 1/2 ton door is this long metal skewer."
He then slid the skewer into the door, popped the latch, and revealed the illustrious cellar. "We actually went into the $4 million wine cellar. It was fantastic." Angie remarked in an interview. The group sat down to dine and Donald congratulated them on a job well done. He offered specific praise for John, the project manager. In an interview, John recalled the gesture, "I was sitting right next to one of the most powerful men in the world. And the coolest thing for me, he leans over and he goes, 'Hey John, good job' and stuck his hand out. It was amazing. It was unbelievable."
TRUMP KARMA
While in the presence of Mr. Trump, Brian took his opportunity to ask Donald about the legitimacy of a story he had heard. Once upon a time, Donald's limousine broke down on the side of the road, and a couple stopped to fix the limo and help Donald get back on his way. According to the story, a week after the incident, Donald paid off the couple's house, and sent them the deed.
Donald replied simply, "It's true. It's true." Later, in an interview, Brian commented on the story, "That just goes to show what type of man he is-- a great man. He believes in karma." Brian went on to lead a toast for his fellow candidates, "Here's to not being the first one fired." The group laughed and cheered in approval as Donald looked on with a smile.
