Sutherland has record label
By KAREN BLISS -- For JAM! Music
Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland, who was inducted into Canada's Walk Of Fame yesterday, is an avid music fan and guitar collector, who also co-owns Ironworks Music, in Silverlake, CA, which is more than just a recording studio.
"It's a label and a production company, and actually we do management, as well," says Sutherland, the star of the hit TV drama "24." "We take care of Lifehouse, which is on tour now and we just finished our tour here in Canada with another one of our artists named Rocco Deluca (Ironworks first signing)."
Sutherland's partner is Illinois-born musician/producer Jude Cole, himself a recording artist with a handful of solo albums to his name. Sutherland, who has never recorded an album of his own, actually made a spoken-word appearance on "Joe" from Cole's 1995 album, "I Don't Know Why I Act This Way."
The long-time friends built the studio from scratch in a historic ironworks foundry. It is decorated with more than two dozen of Sutherland's vintage and new Gibson guitars. They don't rent out the studio, rather bring in developing artists such as Australia's Ry Cumming.
"We work in two facets," says Sutherland. "We either release a record on our own through independent distribution facility, like RED, otherwise we might shop a deal like we did with an artist like MoZella for Warner Brothers."
While working in Toronto filming political thriller "The Sentinel" with Michael Douglas and Kim Basinger, the Los Angeles-based Sutherland -- who was born in the U.K. to Canadian acting parents Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas -- has been catching some local talent. Just two weeks ago, he took in a set at Clinton's by new EMI Music Publishing (Canada) signing Rise Electric, a rock band whose singer, Lukas Rossi, used to front Cleavage (which won best Canadian unsigned band honour at NXNE 2000).
Was he scouting or there for pleasure?
"Both," Sutherland says. "I love music. When I see a band that I think fits what we're trying to accomplish with the label, obviously I'll approach my partner. The Rise Electric show, he was fantastic. That's a fantastic band and I was just walking down the street and I heard them playing and I walked in."
Told that the band is unsigned and he chuckles. "I know. I have their information."

He's soo hilarious. Shows the goofy side of him . The part he gave 'em his signature boo-yeah-tongue-out to his team masa kluar bilik was priceless. Loved that scene & his antics. Come to think of it, walaupon dia kinda pain-in-da-assy, tapi takderlah sampai ada animosity cam Ryan / Magni and others tu. Masa kena marah ngan Dilana pon dia takderlah attack balik & being confrontational. So he aint that bad/tak take things personally & a good team player kalu tengok his contribution masa part awal2. Cuma me think dia jenis yg ada masalah low patience , tak suka dok lama2 going over things. Cam aku gak ah. (Kononya nak tunjuk ada something in common ngan abe Luke wakaka) haha. Masa kolej & even sekang ni pon tak suka discussion lelama , i'd go in and out either to get something or get a "breather" especially once my part's done.:bgrin: |

Rocking on
MiG Ayesa and other "Rock Star: INXS" contestants play a local gig to promote the second season of the reality show
By Karen Budell
[size= -2]Last year, 15 rockers competed on the CBS summer reality show "Rock Star" to front Australian outfit INXS. Canadian J.D. Fortune got the gig, and the band went on to complete a successful world tour. But the runners-up got a pretty good break, too.
Second-place finisher and hometown guy Marty Casey signed an Epic Records deal with his longtime band Lovehammers, and the group opened for the first leg of the INXS tour. (The foursome kicks off their headlining tour on July 27 in St. Louis, Mo.)
And third runner-up MiG Ayesa, 36, finally achieved his dream of becoming a recording artist when he inked a deal due to his performances on the TV show.
This year, "Rock Star" is doing it again. Only this time, 15 rockers are screaming their way to a lead singer spot in Supernova, a newly formed supergroup comprised of drummer Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), guitarist Gilby Clarke (Guns 'N' Roses) and bassist Jason Newsted (Metallica).
In order to promote the second season of the show, a few of the "Rock Star" alums are doing a couple of gigs around the country. On July 20, fans gathered at the Park West for a night that--in "Sesame Street" fashion--seemed brought to you by the letter "M."
MiG, Mink (Neal Carlson's glam rock group) and Marty Casey & Lovehammers hit the stage to promote the show and rockstar.msn.com, the web site where fans vote for their favorite "Rock Star" contestants as well as watch clips of the reality show. Local band The M's headlined.
We sat down with MiG backstage at the Park West to take a look at what his life has been like since competing on "Rock Star: INXS." And to ask: Was it all worth it?
What's life been like since you left the "Rock Star" mansion in L.A. almost one year ago?
I've been touring the world, basically. I've been asked to go around and do concerts in Australia, London, the Phillipines, backwards and forwards from L.A. to New York. And as a consequence of being on the show, I got signed to Universal Records. The album should be released late summer/early fall.
I've been trying to become a recording artist all my life and it's so hard to get my stuff even noticed, and suddenly I'm flying to Australia and headlining this huge bill with ten major recording artists. For me, that was a really nice feeling.
You've been keeping in touch with Marty Casey, but have you kept in touch with anyone else since the show wrapped?
All it takes is one person to send a group email saying, "Hey, rockers, what up?," and suddenly everyone's replying to everybody and you have these conversations going to all 15 of us. It's really nice to hear from everybody, like long-lost brothers and sisters. I did a tour recently with Ty Taylor, Tara Slone and Suzie McNeil. And I've done with gigs with Brandon Calhoun as well; I love the Brandon factor.
We're always in touch, which is really cool. I'd love to keep in touch more but everyone has been trying to find a life after "Rock Star," and everyone's so busy with their own agenda. As much as we can, we do keep in touch. I don't hear as much from J.D. [Laughs]
Speaking of J.D., do you think INXS made the right decision?
Of course they made the right decision. He's perfect for them; he's exactly what they wanted. I'm very happy for him.
So what does your new album sound like?
It's classic rock songs--there are no originals on this first album--with orchestral arrangements I've written with my producers, or string ensembles. So it's marriaging rock with classical music.
Have you seen the new season of "Rock Star: Supernova"?
I keep on missing it. I actually went to CBS for the taping of the first concert, and I've been trying to get back ever since, but I've been touring. I don't have TiVo, but I have looked at the performances on my Verizon Vcast phone. And I know people who know people so I can find out [who got eliminated]. [Laughs]
Do you miss the mansion? Would you go back?
No, not really. I must say I had a great time, but I'm really glad I'm not there again. The mansion was great, and the people were great, but the situation we were put in was so stressful. It was almost like a rite of passage we had to earn to get through that, and I feel like I've paid my dues. It was almost like doing time, and I've done my time. I don't want to do that again, but I'm glad I did because it changed my life.
MiG, 36, lives with his wife and dog in Venice Beach.

Anyone remember if masa RS INXS finale last year ada separate elimination show? Or it's done on the same day as performance show? |
