BREAKING: Iran's foreign minister made it official today: any country can pass through the strait except America, Israel, and their allies.

The narrow waterway between Iran and Oman is one of the most important shipping routes on the planet. About 20 percent of the world's oil passes through it. When Iran closed it two weeks ago, global shipping basically froze.

Now Iran says ships can go through again. But there is a catch. If your ship belongs to the United States, Israel, or any country helping them, you are still blocked. Everyone else is free to pass.
The foreign minister explained it simply. The strait is open to our friends. It is closed to our enemies.
While the strait was closed, the rest of the world's tankers sat stranded in the Gulf. Major companies like Maersk stopped moving entirely. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait cut oil production because they could not ship anything out. Qatar's natural gas exports ground to a halt.
But Iran's own oil kept flowing the whole time. More than 11 million barrels shipped to China using old tankers that stay off the radar.

Now with the strait partially open, things might ease up for everyone else. But if you are flying a US flag or allied with Israel, you are still stuck. And nobody knows exactly how Iran plans to check which ships are friendly and which are not.
Oil prices have been over $100 a barrel all week. This might help a little. But as long as the ban on US-aligned ships stays in place, the strait is not really open.
