tyra reveals how model feud got ugly
Tyra Banks reveals on Friday's telecast of her daytime talk show that one of the reasons she left modeling was to get away from having to work in Naomi Campbell's shadow.
The two women have supposedly had a 14-year feud going on, according to the show's publicity machine.
So, in an effort to keep it real, as Banks often says, and settle the score, Banks and Campbell went head-to-head in a closed studio for Friday's "The Tyra Banks Show", which will be seen on WWOR/Ch. 9 at 5 p.m.
Banks said that as a teenager she looked up to Campbell, but blamed the media for making it seem like a Tyra-versus-Naomi battle.
"The press had cast Naomi and I as rivals before we ever met each other," she said.
Banks said that the modeling business also helped to foster the rivalry.
"Back then there were 10 top models ... but there was an unwritten rule that only one of them could be black," Banks said. "And Naomi was that one black girl."
Banks said during the taping that until now she had told the press the reason she wanted to leave modeling was that she didn't want to fit into those small-sized clothes anymore.
"But that's only 50% of it," Banks admitted to Campbell while they were seated face-to-face. "The other half of that is, I was tired of having to deal with you. ... I was tired of constantly hearing that I got canceled from this job or that, or hearing that this photographer was called, or that magazine was called and [told] not to use me."
Banks, who on previous shows underwent a sonogram to prove that her breasts were real and provided sex toys to her audience, said she plans to launch a sisterhood movement. She said she hopes that clearing the air with Campbell will help other women.
"One of the reasons I wanted to do this show is because sisterhood is so important to me," she said. "I feel like women hate on each other - we're jealous - and it has to stop."
