48......
a) zorse
b)
A zorse or zebroid, specifically the offspring of a zebra stallion and a horse mare. The rarer reverse pairing is sometimes called a horbra (or hebra). Like most other hybrids, the zorse is sterile.[1]
The zorse is a strong animal with traces from both its parents.

48.

a. Zonkey
b. The Zonkey: Hybrid of the zebra and donkey

The cross-breeding of different animals belonging tothe same species has resulted in some rare yet unique hybrids. Two of these animals that have been cross-bred include the zebra and the donkey which has fittingly been named the zonkey. While a zebra stallion and a horse mare creates the zorse, a zebra stallion and donkey mare (jennet) results in the zonkey. However, it was reported in Barbados of 2005 that a zonkey was produced by a donkey stallion (jack) and a zebra mare.
The first zonkey on record can be attributed to Tijuana Mexico. This "faux" zonkey was nothing more than a donkey that is painted with zebra stripes created as a form of entertainment for the tourists. Europe's Colchester Zoo has one of these unique hybrids, claiming their 30-year old zonkey is the first recorded of its kind. This claim has been rejected because Darwin noted these hybrids in the 19th century and again in the 1930's the zebra was discussed by Hammerton.
While Colchester Zoo didn't produce the first zonkey, the zoo's aim was to create a disease resistant breed. Two foals didn't survive but their third attempt produced "Shadow", born in 1975. Shadow is reported as sharing an area at the zoo with other zebras but does not mingle with his counterparts.

Zonkeys are also referred to as zedonks, zebronkeys, zebadonks and zebrydes. Zebrets occur when a donkey stallion has been bred with a zebra mare but this occurrence is extremely rare. A generic term for either is a zebrass. This hybrid mix of a donkey and zebra will have the coloring of the donkey or a close proximity of it, with the zebra striped pattern. The stripes are usually highly visible on the legs with underlying zebra stripes on the face and body.

The behavior of the zonkey has been compared to that of the wild mustang. They can become stressed more easily than that of domesticated horses and tend to flight at the first signs of danger. Breeders from the Spots N Stripes Ranch have stated that "If you know how to train a mule or donkey, you know how to train a zorse or zonkey." They emphasize on training the hybrid from when the foal is born with socialization and interaction with humans.

Cross-breeding of the different species (donkey, horse, zebra) has been an on-going debate as to whether this type of breeding should even occur. The Sells-Floto Circus that acquired one of these hybrids in the early 1900's advertised their zonkey as "A New Member Of The Animal Kingdom. A strange beast came into being a short time ago, and naturally it was the Sells-Floto Circus which seized upon it as thing of interest to the public at large...".

The beginnings of the zonkey is believed to have started with good intentions. Creating a breed of animal that was sure-footed, disease resistant and as reliable as the donkey. With the cost of hybrids going for thousands of dollars, many feel that these creations are nothing more than a luxury item produced to line the pocketbook. This debate will continue as will the research into the unique varieties of hybrids being created.
